Milena Buchs

Dr Milena Büchs is Professor of Sustainable Welfare at the Sustainability Research Institute, University of Leeds, UK. Milena's research focuses on sustainable welfare and just transitions. She has published widely on the relationship between economic growth and welfare states and the question of how welfare states can be transformed so that everyone's needs can be achieved within planetary limits. Several of her publications also focus on distributional and justice implications of climate policies and measures that improve their distributional outcomes. Milena is currently Co-I of the Horizon Europe funded project "Towards a Sustainable Wellbeing Economy" (2022-2025) and of the UKRI-funded Centre for Research on Energy Demand Reduction where she examines inequality of energy use and emissions and fair emission reduction (2018-2023) and has led or co-led five other major research projects. Prior to joining the University of Leeds in 2016, she was a Lecturer and Associate Professor in Sociology and Social Policy at the University of Southampton (2005-2016). She received her PhD in social policy from the Humboldt University Berlin in 2005 (summa cum laude).
